Mayock calls Bills a sleeper team

Posted by Chris Brown on August 28, 2013 – 12:37 pm

NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock was asked by’s Monday Morning QB staff what NFL team he would pick as his sleeper club this season. His answer was the Bills.

In Buffalo there’s some excitement. A year ago, people didn’t understand that they were a tough mismatch,” said Mayock. “Forget the quarterback for a second. Scott Chandler is a better tight end than people think—especially in the red zone. Stevie Johnson is a mismatch out wide. C.J. Spiller had a great year last season. They’re a tough matchup. Now you bring in those two wide receivers they drafted—Robert Woods and Marquise Goodwin. One is vertical guy [Goodwin], and the other is a great route runner [Woods]. More weapons. EJ Manuel looked really good when I visited their camp. If he can function behind their offensive line—it’s not great, but it’s pretty good—if he can get the ball distributed they’re going to be a better team than people think.”

Mayock’s three questions interview appeared on Monday Morning QB this week.

Kelly sees Patriots as vulnerable

Posted by Chris Brown on June 27, 2013 – 12:00 pm

Eager to see the Bills succeed much like they did when he was their quarterback, Hall of Famer Jim Kelly in an appearance on NFL AM on NFL Network shared his opinion on how vulnerable the Patriots are with all that they’ve lost from their high-powered offense this offseason.

“They’re very vulnerable,” Kelly said. “From the standpoint of Tom Brady if you look at what he’s lost with your number one player Wes Welker and Brandon Lloyd. Losing Welker is like for me when I was playing, losing Andre Reed. A guy you depend on not just week in and week out, but in clutch situations you always looked toward your number one target. Mine was always Andre Reed and when you lose a Wes Welker that’s going to hurt. There’s no doubt they have to feel something being without your four or five top receivers.”

New England lost top receiver Welker to Denver, they released Lloyd (2nd in receiving), Rob Gronkowski (3rd) is coming off back surgery and is a question mark for the start of the regular season, Hernandez (4th) is in jail and Danny Woodhead (5th) signed with San Diego.

Still, Kelly is confident New England’s head coach will devise ways around the offense’s personnel shortcomings.

“I’m sure Bill Belichick will find a way,” said Kelly. “He’s probably already got something up his sleeve. But I don’t really feel too sorry for them. I don’t really feel too sorry for them because sooner or later the Bills have got to rise to the top and if we have to take it that way, oh well.”

NFL scheduling does Bills, Falcons no favors

Posted by Chris Brown on June 19, 2013 – 8:38 am

While we all realize the perfect NFL schedule is almost impossible to achieve, it’s hard to think that a league that is typically ahead of the curve doesn’t realize how much this year’s NFL schedule is slanted against the Bills and Falcons.

To fully lay out all the schedule disadvantaged clubs that we profiled on the home page of, here’s the comprehensive list that we compiled in terms of the number of teams each club has to face coming more than a week of rest either via a Thursday night game the week prior or a bye week for 2013.

Teams that play against 5 teams with extra rest

Teams that play against 4 teams with extra rest

Teams that play against 3 teams with extra rest
Arizona, Carolina, NY Giants, Oakland, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay

Teams that play against 2 teams with extra rest
Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, Detroit, Houston, NY Jets, San Diego

Teams that play one team with extra rest
Baltimore, Cincinnati, Dallas, Green Bay, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Miami, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, Tennessee, Washington

Teams that play no teams with extra rest
Kansas City, New England and technically New Orleans

(New Orleans plays Seattle off their bye week, but the Saints are coming off a Thursday night game that same week giving Seattle only three more days to prepare than New Orleans instead of a week)

Teams whose bye weeks were nullified or compromised
Buffalo, Houston, Indianapolis, Seattle – Houston and Indy have same bye week then play the following week.

Buffalo’s bye compromised by Atlanta getting 10-day break same week due to Thursday night game.
Same with Seattle prior to their aforementioned meeting with New Orleans.

Youth likely to be served for Bills

Posted by Chris Brown on May 24, 2013 – 4:31 pm

ESPN NFC West blogger Mike Sando put together a list of NFL clubs projected starters on offense and defense for 2013 to see which teams this coming season would have the youngest average starting lineups in the league. Not surprisingly Buffalo was near the top of the list.

The Bills ranked as the fifth-youngest projected overall starting lineup (offense and defense). Their average age on defense was also fifth-youngest with their offense being 10th youngest.

Though the specific starters projected for each club is not listed, with their offense ranking only 10th youngest it’s probably safe to assume that Sando has Kevin Kolb beginning the 2013 season as the starter at quarterback.
