DL Jones to work out for Bills

Posted by Chris Brown on April 5, 2010 – 2:09 pm

The Bills will be conducting a private workout with Syracuse DL Arthur Jones some time before the draft, along with two other NFL clubs including an AFC East division rival.

That according to the Syracuse Post-Standard. Jones is scheduled to hold his individual pro day Tuesday (April 6th) and 18 teams are expected to be in attendance at the Carrier Dome.

The Bills along with the Patriots and Falcons are the three teams for which Jones will perform an individual workout.

Jones has been unable to work out for NFL scouts and talent evaluators due a torn meniscus suffered last November, which forced him to miss the Orange’s last three games, the Senior Bowl, the combine and the Syracuse pro day.

At 6’3″ 301, Jones played nose tackle the past two seasons and racked up impressive stats including a junior season that saw him make 60 tackles including 13 for loss and 3.5 sacks. Not easy to do when you’re being occupied by two blockers all the time. He had 17 tackles for loss as a sophomore.

Being a former state wrestling champ, Jones knows how to play the leverage game and rarely loses. But he also has long arms enabling him to make plays even when he’s tied up. Jones is also a Rochester native, so if he were to become a draft pick of the Bills there’d be a hometown feel if Jones put on a Buffalo uniform.

Heading into last season he was widely thought to be a late first round prospect, but after a pectoral injury lifting weights last spring, followed by the torn meniscus, a good workout Tuesday will be needed to just get him back into round two. He’s currently seen as a third-round pick by most of the draft “experts.”

Cuse DT workout moved

Posted by Chris Brown on March 4, 2010 – 4:22 pm

It was the Syracuse pro day at the Carrier Dome Thursday, but DT Arthur Jones did not work out for NFL scouts and talent evaluators in attendance.

Jones (6’3″, 295), who is still rehabbing from a torn lateral meniscus suffered late last season, was on hand at the Orange pro day, but Buffalobills.com has learned per a Syracuse source that his workout has been moved to April when he’s expected to be 100 percent. No firm date in April has been set to this point.

Jones is seen as a DT in a 4-3 or a DE in a 3-4 and could go as high as the third round.

Cuse pro day today

Posted by Chris Brown on March 4, 2010 – 10:52 am

Syracuse will be holding its pro day at the Dome today (Thursday) with QB and former Duke basketball player Greg Paulus to work out among others. The big question for some is whether or not DT Arthur Jones is working out.

Jones is part of a deep class of defensive tackles in this year’s draft, but he did not work out at the combine last week. He missed the end of last season with a torn meniscus. Jones is supposed to be in attendance, but whether his knee is healthy enough to perform today remains to be seen.

He’s viewed as a third-round prospect as injuries compromised his final collegiate season, but he has the ability to play defensive tackle in 4-3 or defensive end in a 3-4. He’s also a Rochester native.

Cuse DT not working out

Posted by Chris Brown on February 26, 2010 – 7:06 pm

Syracuse DT Arthur Jones has reportedly decided to skip working out at the NFL Combine.

That according to ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay. No word yet on why Jones reportedly won’t work out. Defensive linemen arrive Saturday at the Combine here in Indy. Coming off an MCL injury during the season, many here in Indy thought he should work out to prove he’s 100 percent healthy.

Jones is considered a 4-3 defensive tackle and is projected as a second or third round pick.
