Little margin for error vs. proven QB

Posted by Chris Brown on August 16, 2014 – 12:48 pm

Buffalo’s defense has played pretty well in the preseason, particularly the starting unit. Going against a proven QB like Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger is seen by Bills’ defenders as a good thing as they prepare for the regular season.

MLB Brandon Spikes likes facing top QBs because it forces a defensive unit to be on point with every detail of their scheme. If they’re not a signal caller like Roethlisberger will take advantage.

“I think you’ve just got to know that the margin of error is very small with a veteran guy like that who can bring it,” said Spikes. “If you make one little slight mistake he can bring it and it can go a long way. So you just want to execute the defense and stay on the same page and basically that’s all it is. It’s really simple. As long as we communicate I think we’ll be good.”

In the Hall of Fame game Buffalo’s defense fared well in keeping another two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback under wraps in the Giants’ Eli Manning.

EJ hoping to soak up QB knowledge from Big Ben

Posted by Chris Brown on August 14, 2014 – 10:01 am

EJ Manuel spent part of his offseason working and training with San Francisco QB Colin Kaepernick. He also spent time watching film of some other upper echelon quarterbacks in the league. Over these two days practicing with the Steelers Manuel is hoping some of Ben Roethlisberger’s way of doing things rubs off on him.

“For me personally, to see Big Ben in action and watch him and see how he prepares for every practice and how he goes in and out of each day is a huge opportunity for me,” said Manuel. “I’m just trying to take advantage of it.

“I’ve always been a huge fan of Big Ben. Growing up in Virginia, it’s not too far from Pittsburgh and obviously early in his career he took those guys to a Super Bowl, so  to get an opportunity to come out and practice with him is awesome. I’m very excited about coming back out (Thursday) and having another good day.”

The second joint practice between the Bills and Steelers starts at 5:30 pm.

Roethlisberger sees Manuel as a good one

Posted by Chris Brown on November 10, 2013 – 10:51 pm

He watched EJ Manuel struggle through Sunday’s game in his team’s victory over Buffalo Sunday, but Ben Roethlisberger believes wholeheartedly that EJ Manuel will be a successful quarterback in the NFL.

After the game he was asked about the pressure that the Steelers defense dialed up against Manuel and the Bills offense. Truthfully there wasn’t a lot of blitzing, but Roethlisberger despite Manuel’s struggles sees a quality signal caller.

“Any time that they can get pressure on quarterbacks, especially young ones, it helps you for the rest of the day,” said Roethlisberger. “Give them and Coach LeBeau a lot of credit for getting after him. E.J. is a good quarterback. He is going to be good.”

Dick LeBeau improved to 18-2 against rookie quarterbacks after the Steelers win Sunday.

Big Ben getting dropped

Posted by Chris Brown on November 10, 2013 – 8:05 am

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger has taken his fair share of sacks over the years. It’s often a byproduct of the veteran signal caller trying to extend plays and buy time. This season however, Roethlisberger is on pace to set a career-high in sacks taken.

Through Pittsburgh’s first eight games, Roethlisberger has been sacked 31 times. That’s the most he’s been taken down in the first eight starts of any season in his career. Part of the problem is a porous offensive line and the fact that there has been little in the way of a consistent rushing attack to effectively balance out their play calling.

If the Steelers hold to form it should present the Bills men up front with more than their share of pass rush opportunities. Here’s a look at Roethlisberger’s sack totals from the first eight starts in each of his 10 NFL seasons.

Year       Sacks taken
2004       11
2005       16
2006       25
2007       19
2008       26
2009       23
2010       22
2011       25
2012       17
2013       31

Big Ben finds Fitz entertaining

Posted by Chris Brown on November 25, 2010 – 4:02 pm

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger has caught some highlights of Buffalo’s offense the past few weeks and he finds Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Bills attack pretty entertaining.

“Yeah he’s playing great,” said Roethlisberger. “Coach (Tomlin) called him a gunslinger and that’s kind of what he’s doing. He’s just coming out and playing fearless and he’s doing some great things. I don’t watch the offense but coach shows some highlights and you see Fitz running down the field and throwing blocks down field for receivers and running backs, so it’s pretty fun to watch.”

Roethlisberger and Fitzpatrick have been neck and neck all year in one important offensive category this season, third down passing. Roethlisberger is currently tops in the AFC (and the NFL) in third down passer rating with a figure of 119.6. Ryan Fitzpatrick is second in the AFC (4th in NFL) and a passer rating of 107.5.

Both are also averaging more than eight yards per attempt. Roethlisberger is averaging 8.96 yards per attempt. Fitz is at 8.64.

No talk on Roethlisberger

Posted by Chris Brown on April 22, 2010 – 9:53 am

Despite the fact that there was speculation Wednesday that the Steelers were discussing Ben Roethlisberger’s availability with the Buffalo Bills, GM Buddy Nix disputed that in a late afternoon interview on 103.3 The Edge on the Shredd and Ragan show.

Nix was asked about the level of discussion concerning Roethlisberger with the Steelers and Nix, who had been in meetings all day up until the time of the radio interview. Here was his response to being asked about talks with the Steelers concerning their franchise QB.

“To be honest with you until (Bills VP of Communications) Scott (Berchtold) got me and we were walking up the steps, I had no idea that was going on,” said Nix. “I have been in a meeting and I am trying to take care of our business.  Nobody has talked to me and I feel assured that there is nobody in this building that they have talked to.  So, you can put an end to that rumor.”

Here’s where you can hear the full interview.

Bills contacted about Big Ben

Posted by Chris Brown on April 21, 2010 – 1:31 pm

The Bills are one of a handful teams reportedly contacted by the Steelers as they inquire about interest in Ben Roethlisberger.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter however, the Bills aren’t interested. Here are his two latest twitter posts to that effect (see below).

Adam_Schefter Here are teams that Steelers have called about Roethlisberger: Rams, 49ers, Raiders, Bills, Jaguars, Seahawks and Browns.

Adam_Schefter Here are the known no’s on interest in Roethlisberger right now: Rams, Bills. Others might not be, just not known yet.

It really says something that the Steelers are willing to offer up Roethlisberger to a division opponent like Cleveland.

Looks like Roethlisberger’s off the field behavior is dropping his value like a stone.

At such a high profile position like quarterback off the field issues are magnified all the more.
