Big play opportunities?

Posted by Chris Brown on October 26, 2014 – 10:25 am

Through the first seven games this season the Bills have turned in some big offensive plays almost every week. There’s a strong likelihood they’re going to need a handful of such plays if they’re going to beat the Jets.

As we mentioned in our earlier post this morning, Buffalo should have an advantage against New York’s corners with the talent they’ll line up at receiver. And so far this season the Bills stand sixth in the league in plays that have gone for 20 yards or more with 31.

New York’s defense, while stout in many areas (run defense, forcing opponents 3&out among them), they have had trouble preventing the big play from happening. They rank near the middle of the pack (14th) in preventing big plays having given up 24 so far this season.

New York’s big play capability has not been there this season, which is partly why they chose to acquire Percy Harvin when the opportunity presented itself.

Big play breakdown

Posted by Chris Brown on November 25, 2013 – 9:57 am

It may come as a bit of a surprise, but Marquise Goodwin does not lead the team in big pass plays this season. It’s due mainly to the fact that he missed four games with a broken hand. As we covered on today however, he is a developing weapon for the offense. Here’s a breakdown of the top big play receiving targets of the Bills this season, and it clearly favors those who have been able to stay in the lineup.

Big pass plays are considered any pass play that covers 20 yards or more. Here’s how the big play receiving targets rank through 11 games this season.

Rank      Player                                   #of big pass plays
1              Scott Chandler                         6 (long – 33)
T-2          T.J. Graham                            5 (long – 47)
T-2          Stevie Johnson                       5 (long – 45)
T-4          Marquise Goodwin                4 (long – 59)
T-4          Robert Woods                        4 (long – 42)
6              Fred Jackson                          2 (long – 22)

There are three other players with one big pass play this season. Lee Smith (28 yards), C.J. Spiller (27 yards) and Frank Summers (34 yards).

The player with the greatest number of the team’s longest plays is not surprisingly Goodwin. Three of his four big plays have covered 40 yards or more and all went for touchdowns. Graham is second with two 40-plus yard plays.

KC offense not racking up big plays

Posted by Chris Brown on November 2, 2013 – 10:52 am

Kansas City’s offense has been steady this season, but far from spectacular. Their big play tally this season is below the league average.

Of their 542 plays from scrimmage on offense only 27 of them have gone for big plays (20 yards or more). That’s only five percent of their offensive plays.

Perhaps most surprising is RB Jamaal Charles, who is a home-run threat with the ball in his hands, has not delivered more big plays in the run game. The Chiefs rank 20th in big play run with just three. Charles’ longest run from scrimmage this season is just 24 yards.

Of all of Buffalo’s opponents Kansas City is the third-worst at turning in big plays. Cleveland and Carolina are the only clubs that have less pop in their offense.

Another chance for big plays?

Posted by Chris Brown on November 15, 2012 – 5:44 pm

Last week the Bills faced a New England defense that had given up more 20-plus yard pass play than any other team in the league. Buffalo had five pass plays of 20 yards or more against the Patriots in last week’s 37-31 loss. Miami’s defense isn’t much better in defending big pass plays.

The Dolphins have given up 37 pass plays of 20 yards or more, which ranks 28th in the NFL (5th most). Miami gave up two pass plays of more than 20 yards to the Titans last week, including a 26-yard pass for a touchdown. The week before the Colts rolled up nine pass plays of 20 yards or more against the Dolphins.

Buffalo is 18th in the league in pass plays of 20 yards or more this season with 26 on the season.
