Vikes LB Greenway hoping to return Sunday

Posted by Chris Brown on October 16, 2014 – 4:46 pm

Vikings LB Chad Greenway is trying to return from a three-game absence this week due to three broken ribs suffered back in Week 3. Minnesota defensive coordinator George Edwards (a former Bills DC) commented on his linebacker’s chances of playing Sunday against the Bills.

“Well he practiced (Wednesday) so we’ll just progress through the week and just see how he does during practice as we go through the week,” Edwards said. “(Wednesday) he practiced pretty good and seemed to be okay but we just have to follow it through the week and see how he feels as we keep going.”

Edwards believes Greenway, who practiced fully on Thursday, can make a big difference in their defensive scheme if he’s available.

Chad is a good player, there’s no doubt about it. Getting him back would be a boost for us but again, we just have to follow it through the week, see how he’s doing, see as they keep looking at him through the week, see how he’s progressing and that kind of thing,” said Edwards. “I don’t know medically all the things that they’re talking about so from that aspect of it we’ll just have to keep going and see how he progresses through the week.”

Greenway was listed as doubtful last week and did not play. He said last week that breathing is the most painful thing to do when his heart rate is up.

Orton wary of Vikes blitz packages

Posted by Chris Brown on October 16, 2014 – 11:00 am

Kyle Orton and the rest of the Bills offense is looking to get back on track Sunday and although the Vikings are just 20th against the run and 20th in points allowed, Buffalo’s veteran quarterback is very familiar with Minnesota head coach Mike Zimmer’s blitz schemes from his days as defensive coordinator with Dallas and Cincinnati.

“Good defense, fast linebackers, fast secondary; attacking style defense,” said Orton. “Obviously third down anytime you play Coach Zimmer, third down is going to be an issue with their blitz package. We’re going to have to do a good job on early downs. I think that’s the thing that looking back when we do well on first and second down and kept ourselves in good third downs, we’ve executed and gone down and scored so I think that’s really a focus.”

The Vikings have 14 sacks on the season.
