Tyrod: We’ve got to do better getting points

Posted by Chris Brown on August 9, 2015 – 10:38 am

The Bills offense came away with just 13 points on 18 possessions with drive starts that began at their own 30 or 35-yard line in  Saturday’s blue-white scrimmage. As Tyrod Taylor saw it that’s not going to get it done come the regular season.

“We didn’t get in the end zone as much as we would like,” Taylor said. “We moved the ball up and down the field. We’ve got to focus more so on the red zone, putting the ball in the end zone and not setting up for field goals. I think its some good things to take away from the scrimmage. First time we got live action against the defense. Some good things to take away, like I said. But definitely some stuff we could go watch and get better at.”

Taylor had a chance on a throw in the red zone for a touchdown, but missed Dezmin Lewis in the left corner of the end zone by not putting enough air under the ball.

“That touchdown I should have had in the red zone,” he said. “Definitely wanted to hit that one in, I had one down there I should of hit as well.”

EJ staying even keeled about QB battle

Posted by Chris Brown on August 9, 2015 – 9:23 am

EJ Manuel left his head coach impressed with some of the plays he was able to make in the blue-white scrimmage Saturday night, but in no way is the third-year quarterback satisfied with his play.

“It feels good,” said Manuel of making a handful of plays Saturday. “But understanding that, you know, this isn’t all that it’s going to take to win the job. You know you’ve got to keep doing it, keep stacking good days and that’s the biggest thing, focus on what I can do to get better and not worry about anything else.”

Manuel admitted he was more aggressive than he would’ve been last year at this time and was charged up by getting the nod to start the scrimmage with the first unit.

“Once I knew I was starting I definitely said lets go out and have fun because if you try to do too much, that’s when you play locked up and you’re not doing what you know you can do,” said Manuel. “So, I definitely felt like I was able to take a breath of fresh air and just go out here and play. There’s some things I still want to clean up, but I had fun, that was the biggest thing.”

Why Bills kept thing vanilla in scrimmage

Posted by Chris Brown on August 9, 2015 – 8:03 am

There wasn’t a whole lot of flashy plays in Saturday night’s blue-white scrimmage, but there were some big plays. Buffalo’s offense and defense were not going to lay their playbook plans for the regular season out there for a reason. As head coach Rex Ryan knows there are spies out there.

“Our guys were putting in plays, but our fans aren’t the only ones watching these things so again I think that’s something of note as well,” said Ryan. “We know there’s other teams here and so we play pretty vanilla.”

For scrimmage sessions and sometimes for just regular practice it’s not uncommon for other NFL clubs to dispatch scouts to other team’s training camps to observe what their plans might be for the regular season, especially within the division.

Watkins: We can definitely learn from this

Posted by Chris Brown on August 8, 2015 – 11:19 pm

Buffalo’s offense had some big plays Saturday night, but they also had some miscues. As Sammy Watkins saw it they’ve got plenty of things to correct heading into Monday’s practice.

“I mean we’re all grown men, we know the plays but for the most part we’re going against a great defense and great defensive coaches so you’ve got to look at our defensive line, the things that they can do and those are guys that we know how to play with,” said Watkins. “Miami’s got those types of guys and our offensive line’s got to fix the problems, we’ve got to fix our problems and we’ve got to play better.

“Everything we did, we took ourselves back. Everything that we did on the first play, you got a fumble, loss of yards. So those things that we can correct, I mean, we can learn from it and go watch some film and fix it.”

Bradham: Stopping run was job one

Posted by Chris Brown on August 8, 2015 – 11:12 pm

The Bills defense flashed a lot when it came to putting pressure on their quarterbacks in the blue-white scrimmage Saturday night, but their run defense was pretty good as well.

Sure the offense got a couple of quality gains through the course of the 18 series between the offensive and defensive units. But through the course of the night Buffalo’s defense had 11 tackles for loss and one for no gain on run plays.

“Yeah pretty much that was the thing we wanted to come out and do, definitely stop the run,” said Nigel Bradham, who had a tackle for a five-yard loss on LeSean McCoy. “I mean we knew they had a great running back, obviously, we face him every day. But the main thing was stop the run, get a good feel of tackling and everything, fundamentals and just playing together.”

Some of the other Bills in on tackles for loss on run plays were Andre Fluellen, who had two, Ty Powell, Jimmy Gaines, Jerry Hughes and Tony Steward.

Why the 2’s & 3’s played most of the scrimmage

Posted by Chris Brown on August 8, 2015 – 11:00 pm

There were 18 series between the offense and defense Saturday night in the blue-white scrimmage, but the first team units only saw three series of work. The second and third team offensive and defensive units got the majority of the work in the two-plus hour session. According to head coach Rex Ryan that was the plan all along.

“I really wanted to push the twos and threes (Saturday), that’s why they got a ton of the work coming back from halftime,” said Ryan. ‘I really wanted to extend those guys because they are going to play the majority of that first preseason game. So the conditioning, I wanted them to get a feel for what it’s gonna be like when we play Carolina that first preseason game.”

Buffalo first preseason game is this coming Friday against Carolina at 7 pm at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

Ryan: More defined plans for QBs on horizon

Posted by Chris Brown on August 3, 2015 – 11:23 pm

When the Bills return from their off day Wednesday, they’ll be close to a week into camp. And though none of the three QBs in the competition to be the starter has begun to clearly separate himself from the other two the coaching staff has plans to help move that process along.

Head coach Rex Ryan shed some light on those plans Monday night.

“After the day off we’ll probably start having a period or two where it is specifically based on an opponent and things like that,” said Ryan with respect to the offensive play calls. “So I think that’s when will start really seeing our guys go, but I like to see us…I think that (intrasquad) scrimmage that we’re going to have is important. That to me is an important, really important scrimmage. I think it’s just as important as preseason games. So that day I’m really looking forward to.”

The team’s blue-white scrimmage is scheduled for Saturday.
