Pats release tight end

Posted by Chris Brown on March 4, 2010 – 5:12 pm

The New England Patriots have clipped a tight end off their roster.

The league announced on their transaction wire that veteran TE Chris Baker was released making him an unrestricted free agent. With Ben Watson also set to become a free agent at midnight, the Patriots are clearly in the market for some tight end help. Of course they do have three second-round picks in this year’s draft.

Jets FA TE Baker close to signing with Pats

Posted by Chris Brown on February 27, 2009 – 3:46 pm

Looks like the rivalry and signing away players between the Jets and Patriots hasn’t lost any of its luster despite Eric Mangini moving on to be the head coach in Cleveland. According to Boston Globe reporter Mike Reiss, the Patriots are close to signing Jets FA TE Chris Baker.

Baker was released by the Jets leading up to the opening on free agency due to a fat roster bonus he was due in early March. He’s arguably one of the best blocking tight ends on the market and offers some playmaking ability in the pass game, though he’s not a game breaker.

Jets G Moore is a quality interior OL

Posted by Chris Brown on February 21, 2009 – 12:21 pm

With the Jets purging their roster of players due to receive big roster bonuses next month, it could be Buffalo’s gain. TE Chris Baker was clipped Friday and would be a boost for Buffalo’s run game, while offering some pass catching ability.

According to the Newark Star-Ledger, the Jets will also release starting guard Brandon Moore. Moore is coming off arguably his best season and if released would be an intriguing option to improve Buffalo’s offensive line, while also hurting the Jets.

Of course he has to be released by the Jets first, and the Bills would obviously have to make some decisions with their current offensive front, which underachieved through the first half of last season.

There’s no question that losing Moore would hurt the Jets run game, though both he and Baker’s representatives are reportedly open to renegotiating and re-signing with the Jets.

Former Jets TE Chris Baker an option?

Posted by Chris Brown on February 21, 2009 – 1:54 am

There’s no question that the Bills could use some help at the tight end position and after seeing Chris Baker cut by the Jets, it’d be hard to find a true in line blocker that can make plays in the passing game like him in free agency even though he’s not one that’s going to bust loose for 20-yard gains with regularity.

But he is 29 and signing him would hurt the Jets, as they do not have a viable replacement for Baker. Apparently the Jets are interested in signing Baker back as he was released to avoid a $9.5M roster bonus in early March. Born in Queens, NY Baker is reportedly interested in returning to New York.

Would you make a play for him?

Jets injury update

Posted by Chris Brown on October 31, 2008 – 7:29 pm

ILB David Harris (hip) did not practice all week and is listed as doubtful for the Jets on Sunday. If he can’t go backup Cody Spencer would normally fill in, but he’s questionable with a shoulder injury and was limited in practice all week. So the job would fall to David Bowens.

WRs Laveranues Coles (thigh) and Jerricho Cotchery (shoulder) are both listed as probable and are expected to play.

TE Chris Baker (hip) was limited in practice all week and is questionable for the game. He’ll be a game time decision. Fellow TE Bubba Franks (hip) is doubtful, so rookie Dustin Keller could have a lot on his plate Sunday.

S Eric Smith (head) is out for the game. Abram Elam is expected to start in his place.

RT Damien Woody who missed Wednesday and Thursday practice due to personal matters, returned to practice on Friday and was removed from the injury report.

Jets injury update

Posted by Chris Brown on October 31, 2008 – 1:41 pm

MLB David Harris is looking less and less likely to play Sunday for New York as he doesn’t appear ready to return from a groin injury. Harris rode the stationary bike for practice again on Thursday.

His backup Cody Spencer has been limited in practice the past two days with a shoulder injury, which would leave David Bowens as the only remaining ILB replacement.

Harris is the Jets’ leading tackler. He’s also the team’s defensive signal caller with the radio helmet. If he can’t play fellow ILB Eric Barton is expected to have the radio communication helmet.

TE Chris Baker (hip) practiced on a limited basis, but fellow TE Bubba Franks (hip) did not practice for a second straight day. If Baker and Franks can’t go it would leave them a bit short on the blocking side of things at TE though Eric Mangini insisted that rookie Dustin Keller, a pass catching TE by trade, could block on the line. I have my doubts.

WRs Laveranues Coles (thigh) and Jerricho Cotchery (shoulder) were both limited for a second straight day on Thursday, but both are expected to play Sunday.

S Eric Smith (head) has not practiced yet this week is not expected to play. Abram Elam is expected to replace him in the starting lineup.

OL Damien Woody (personal) has not practiced this week. The team is giving him the game plan via computer. Woody has also been plagued by a nagging calf injury. Wayne Hunter is the Jets’ swing tackle.

Jets injury report

Posted by Chris Brown on October 29, 2008 – 8:17 pm

The list is long for the Jets as far as injuries are concerned.

Not practicing for the Jets Wednesday were RT Damien Woody (personal), TE Bubba Franks (hip) and ILB David Harris (groin). Starting S Eric Smith also did not practice (head).

Harris appears to be the most serious, and his backup Cody Spencer is dinged too (see below). If Harris can’t go David Bowens presumably would step in as the only other backup ILB should Spencer be unable to play as well.

TE Chris Baker (hip), WR Laveranues Coles (thigh), WR Jerricho Cotchery (shoulder) and LB Cody Spencer (shoulder) were all limited in practice Wednesday.

Baker is expected to be back this week. Coles and Cotchery are both nicked up, but expected to play.

Kicker Mike Nugent (thigh) is still out so Jay Feely will continue to kick for the Jets.
