Watkins to start for Eagles

Posted by Chris Brown on October 5, 2011 – 9:31 am

According to a Delaware News Journal report, the Eagles will be making a change at their starting right guard position, where they’ll be inserting their first-round pick into the lineup.

Eagles first-round draft choice, Danny Watkins, will reportedly make his first career start at right guard in place of Kyle DeVan. Watkins was working with the first unit for the Eagles all summer in training camp until DeVan was picked up off waivers by Philadelphia and stepped right into the starting lineup at the beginning of the season.

So the Eagles are likely to have two changes on their offensive line Sunday against the Bills. Watkins at right guard and King Dunlap at left tackle in place of the injured Jason Peters (hamstring).

More workouts for Watkins

Posted by Chris Brown on March 15, 2011 – 5:48 pm

After working out for the Bears and Bengals last week, Baylor OL Danny Watkins has two more teams lined up on Wednesday.

According to the National Football Post, Watkins has workouts with the Ravens and Rams. Watkins played tackle at Baylor, but projects inside to guard in the NFL.

No word on whether Watkins is purposely setting up workouts with teams that begin with the same consonant on purpose. Perhaps the Cardinals and Cowboys or Titans and Texans will be the next pairing (sarcasm).

Watkins is forecast by most as a second round pick.

Phil Taylor 1st round lock?

Posted by Chris Brown on March 4, 2011 – 4:05 pm

Baylor’s pro day proved to only raise the stock of two of their top prospects in OL Danny Watkins and DT Phil Taylor.

That according to’s Gil Brandt who was on hand for the workout. He feels Taylor may have locked up his stock as a first-round pick.

I can say that Taylor was one of the three most impressive players at the Senior Bowl in late January and did not disappoint with his combine workout. I was hoping he’d be an option for the Bills at the top of round 2, but that does not appear to be looking like a probable scenario.

Watkins passes eyeball test

Posted by Chris Brown on February 21, 2011 – 9:37 am

There’s a basic part of scouting where scouts assess a player’s body type. They assess the body frame, potential to add strength and bulk and measure arm length, hand size etc. Before all that the initial impression is what they refer to as the eyeball test. Baylor OL Danny Watkins passes the eyeball test, but not as an offensive tackle.

Watkins has played tackle his whole football career, though its only been 4 years. He’s taken to tackle well, but looking at his body type he looks like a guard.

He’s thickly built and doesn’t appear long in the arms at first glance. he looks like a tailor made NFL guard so its not surprising that’s where most NFL talent evaluators see him.

The good news for him is he proved a quick study at guard where he played the whole week at the Senior Bowl, rarely getting beat in 1-on-1s and faring well in the game.

At worst he’s considered a late 2nd round pick by most.
