One last look at the Senior Bowl South team

Posted by johnmurphyshow on January 23, 2014 – 3:14 pm

We’re on our way to Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile for one last look at the South team. Today should be little more than a walk through for both teams, with the game itself coming up Saturday.
Our conversations with Bills decision makers this week here in Mobile left little doubt about how strongly committed the team is to QB EJ Manuel after his rookie year. But the Bills scouts no doubt have enjoyed what they’ve seen from a couple of South QBs.
Fresno State’s Derek Carr is undoubtedly the top quarterback at the Senior Bowl this week. The younger brother of David Carr, Derek has elite arm talent and has had a very good week of practice in Mobile, throwing the ball well through some stiff winds in a couple of workouts.
And Carr has a healthy dose of confidence about his ability also.
“I’m always confident,” he told us Wednesday, “I could throw four picks and I’m still going to be confident. That’s just my mindset. I just want to come out here and show these teams that I could be their franchise quarterback.”
Carr wears number 4 here, as he did at Fresno, an homage to another QB who had a pretty healthy dose of self-confidence: Brett Favre.
Carr’s teammate on the South is the surprise star of the Senior Bowl workouts. Eastern Illinois” Jimmy Garappolo only got invited to the Senior Bowl last week, when Alabama’s A.J. McCarron pulled out. Garappolo had an outstanding performance at the EAst-West Shrine Game last week in Florida, and he picked up where he left off this week in Mobile. He’s very intelligent with a quick release, if not an especially strong arm.
Garappolo will be our guest tonight on The John Murphy Show podcast.

Carr early South practice standout

Posted by johnmurphyshow on January 20, 2014 – 3:41 pm

Through most of the 7 on 7 work it’s easy to find the best QB on the South team at the Senior Bowl. It’s Fresno State’s Derek Carr. He looks calm and comfortable and has A big arm to go along with his big name. Carr is the younger brother of David Carr, another Fresno St QB who was the first overall draft pick by Houston
At the first practice, Derek Carr had several nice sideline passes to big WR Jordan Matthews of Vanderbilt. And Carr is getting the first reps as the South team moves into team work.

Carr expected to be Senior Bowl QB standout

Posted by johnmurphyshow on January 20, 2014 – 1:30 pm

Last year at the Senior Bowl, it was an embarrassment of riches at the quarterback spot. EJ Manuel, Mike Glennon, Ryan Nassib, and Tyler Wilson brought some star power to the position.
This year, the QB ranks lack a big name passer.
Fresno State QB Derek Carr appears to be the quarterback drawing the most interest, as the Senior Bowl teams get ready to take the field for practice Monday afternoon.
The younger brother of former QB David Carr, the number one overall pick in the 2002 draft, Derek Carr is viewed as a potential firsts rounder in his own right. He threw 50-touchdown passes last year for Fresno State.
Carr will get plenty of snaps for the South team in practice at the Senior Bowl this week. The other quarterbacks on the South roster are Jimmy Garoppolo, the star of the East-West Shrine game last weekend, and David Fales of San Jose State.
