Lobbying for former teammates?

Posted by Chris Brown on April 26, 2012 – 12:05 pm

Bills players are in town this week for the start of Buffalo’s offseason conditioning program. With their arrival running in concert with the start of the NFL draft, one wonders do players lobby the personnel department on behalf of their former college teammates? Bills head coach Chan Gailey provided me with the answer.

I specifically asked Chan if Marcell Dareus lobbied for any of his former Alabama teammates in an exclusive one-on-one interview today knowing up to five prospects from Nick Saban’s squad could come off the board tonight.

“Those Alabama guys are pretty loyal to each other they are, but there’s not much lobbying going on,” said Gailey. “I think they probably realize that it doesn’t make a difference what they say. They’re pretty good about it. They tell you the truth about the guys when you ask them and we appreciate that. There’s not a lot of lobbying going on.”

Five Alabama players did make pre-draft visits to One Bills Drive. Mark Barron, Dont’a Hightower, De’quan Menzie, Dre’ Kirkpatrick and Trent Richardson.

Gilmore could be 2nd CB off board

Posted by Chris Brown on April 17, 2012 – 8:24 am

South Carolina’s Stephon Gilmore, who is making a pre-draft visit at 1 Bills Drive today (Tuesday), wasn’t seen as a first-round pick by some of the draft analysts just over a month ago, but that’s changed now.

With North Alabama’s Janoris Jenkins troubled off the field resume and Alabama’s Dre Kirkpatrick forcing teams to do a little extra leg work, some NFL clubs are viewing Gilmore as a safer and just as talented option.

“He is a veteran, started from the time he got there,” said Kiper of Gilmore. “He’s aggressive and physical, will tackle and throw his body around. A little stiff, not as fluid as some of the other corners, but I think he’s certainly battling Dre Kirkpatrick to see who is going to be that second corner off the board. Gilmore is putting some heat on him. I have Gilmore going 23 to Detroit and Kirkpatrick 17 to Cincinnati and that could easily flip.”

2 more pre-draft visitors for Bills

Posted by Chris Brown on April 5, 2012 – 11:26 am

On Wednesday we reported that the Bills were hosting a quartet of draft prospects at One Bills Drive. Here on Thursday there were two more. has learned that the club hosted two other top prospects in this year’s draft pool in USC OT Matt Kalil and Alabama CB Dre Kirkpatrick.

Kalil is the consensus top offensive tackle in the draft class as he’s clearly the most athletic in the group. Having a dad, Frank, (who was drafted by the Bills but played in the USFL) and a brother, Ryan, who currently plays for Carolina doesn’t hurt either.

“It’s definitely helped out,” said Kalil. “My brother has almost kind of laid the path for me. I started off coming out of Servite when he went to Servite (HS), going through SC and going through this draft process, I’ve always had my brother there to help me and telling me everything to expect and having that tool there to help me in any way possible has definitely been a big help.”

Kalil was joined on his visit to One Bills Drive by Crimson Tide CB Dre Kirkpatrick. Often compared to LSU’s Morris Claiborne, Kirkpatrick sees some similarities and differences with his SEC rival.

“I think our games are similar,” he said. “Only difference is I’m just a little taller. I’m very physical and want that physical play.”

Kirkpatrick is forecast as a late first-round pick.
