Bills former QB Kemp has cancer

Posted by Chris Brown on January 7, 2009 – 7:54 pm

The Associated Press is reporting that former Bills QB Jack Kemp has cancer. The report does not say what form of cancer Kemp is dealing with as he appears to be in the early stages of addressing the disease.

He plans to continue working so the hope obviously is his physicians have caught this in the very early stages. We’ll have more details as they become available.

Kemp is the second former Bills quarterback to be struck with cancer. Joe Ferguson was afflicted with stage four Burkitt’s Lymphoma and beat that, along with pneumonia, so hopefully Kemp is as successful as Ferguson in fighting his cancer.

Jack Kemp Q&A

Posted by Chris Brown on October 23, 2008 – 7:54 pm

Former Bills QB and former WNY Congressman Jack Kemp was recently interviewed by NFLPlayers.com. He covers a lot of bases both politically and in football.

He also commented on Brad Butler, who worked in the office of his Washington D.C. political consulting firm this past winter when asked about football players transitioning to politics.

Q: Several former NFL players have successfully made the transition to politics. Is that a natural shift for an athlete?

A: Well, I think sports and professional sports in particular are so competitive that once you get out of your competitive sports life, you think about competitive politics.

There’s Heath Shuler, who is a very strong Democratic congressman from North Carolina and a good friend of mine. There’s Steve Largent, J.C. Watts and lots of guys thinking about it.

Brad Butler with the Bills spent a half of a year in my office at Kemp Partners. He’s just a tremendous young role model, an intelligent guard for the Bills and my hope is that some day he takes a look at competitive politics.

Here’s the entire Q&A.
