Dolphins tackle situation shaky

Posted by Chris Brown on December 16, 2011 – 2:56 pm

With Jake Long questionable for Sunday’s game with the Bills, Miami interim head coach Todd Bowles had to leave a lot up in the air as far as his left tackle position goes.

“He practiced some,” said Bowles of Long, who was limited in practice Friday. “Right now he’s questionable. We’ll see how he feels on the plane ride. Kind of go from there.”

When asked if Long was limited more to rest him for Sunday’s game, Bowles indicated that he wasn’t.

“No. Jake’s a warrior,” Bowles said. “He wants to play and if he can play and if he’s healthy he will.”

Long suffered a back injury in last Sunday’s game. Last weekend he was replaced by Nate Garner, but this week John Jerry has been his replacement in practice. Jerry is a guard by trade and was lined up at right guard last week to replace starting RG Vernon Carey, who left the game with an ankle injury and is questionable this week.

Jerry never played offensive tackle in college at LSU or in the NFL, so he would be making his first NFL start at left tackle Sunday if Long cannot play.

“He’s taken some reps,” said Bowles. “The last few weeks we’ve kind of moved our guys around in case of emergency so he’s had a lot of reps there.”

Nate Garner was Long’s left tackle replacement last week, but was horrible in pass protection giving up three sacks.

QB Moore, LT Long questionable

Posted by Chris Brown on December 16, 2011 – 2:13 pm

Dolphins QB Matt Moore and LT Jake Long are far from sure things for Sunday’s game with the Bills.

Both were listed as questionable by the team on Friday. Long did not practice on Friday after participating on a limited basis Thursday due to a back injury sustained in last Sunday’s game against the Eagles.

Moore is recovering from a concussion suffered last Sunday as well. He did not practice Wednesday, was limited on Thursday and Friday.

Starting RG Vernon Carey was also limited for a third straight day in practice with an ankle injury. He too is questionable as is starting TE Anthony Fasano with a rib injury. He’s questionable.

Jake Long not practicing

Posted by Chris Brown on December 16, 2011 – 1:06 pm

He didn’t practice on Wednesday due to a back injury suffered last week against Philadelphia. Jake Long practiced on a limited basis on Thursday. But today Long was on the side and not practicing putting his status in doubt for Sunday’s game.

That according to the Palm Beach Post, which is reporting that Long only jogged with a helmet on at the start of practice, but did not participate in individual position drills.

We’ll have Long’s official status for Sunday’s game later this afternoon. Reserve OL John Jerry practiced at LT in place of Long on Wednesday. Nate Garner filled in for Long in last week’s game when he left with the back injury, but by most accounts was awful. Jerry was already filling in at right guard for the injured Vernon Carey.

LT Long misses practice for Fins

Posted by Chris Brown on December 14, 2011 – 10:23 pm

Dolphins Pro Bowl left tackle Jake Long left last week’s game against Philadelphia with a back injury. He did not practice on Wednesday.

“Jake’s (Long) a quick healer, he missed practice,” said interim head coach Todd Bowles. “He’s coming along. He’s moving around, but we’ll see that day-to-day. We’ll know more about that by Friday.”

When Long went out of the game he was replaced by Nate Garner, who is listed as the backup right tackle and did not fare well in pass protection. The other backups are Ryan Cook, Will Barker and Ray Feinga, all of whom were inactive against the Eagles last week.

Replacing Long at left tackle in practice Wednesday was second-year man John Jerry. Jerry filled in at right guard last Sunday when Vernon Carey left with an ankle injury.

Jake Long has back injury

Posted by Chris Brown on December 12, 2011 – 3:23 pm

Dolphins Pro Bowl LT Jake Long was knocked out of Sunday’s game against the Eagles Sunday and Miami’s offensive line was a shambles in his absence.

Long left with a reported back injury and Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano was guarded in his comments about his best offensive lineman.

“From Jake Long’s standpoint you guys will get that on Wednesday,” said Sparano in his Monday press conference.

Miami gave up nine sacks Sunday in the loss to the Eagles, with Matt Moore sacked four times and knocked from the game. J.P. Losman was sacked five times. The Dolphins have given up more sacks than any other team in the league allowing 44 on the season.

Miami’s Carey questionable

Posted by Chris Brown on December 13, 2010 – 12:32 pm

Miami starting right tackle Vernon Carey, missed his first start in five seasons Sunday against the Jets due to a knee injury suffered the week before. This morning head coach Tony Sparano, left Carey’s status for this Sunday’s game up in the air per Miami Herald columnist Armando Salguero.

“I don’t know right now,” said Sparano in a press conference this morning, when asked if Carey could return to the lineup this week against the Bills. “Really don’t. I can’t tell you yes.”

Second-year lineman Lydon Murtha replaced Carey in the lineup Sunday in Miami’s 10-6 win over the Jets. Murtha was part of a suspect front that saw Chad Henne get sacked five times and fumble twice, losing both of them.

Add in the fact that Jake Long is playing with a bum shoulder and the edges of Miami’s pass protection is less than 100 percent to say the least.

Dolphins LT Long nicked up

Posted by Chris Brown on September 6, 2010 – 3:42 pm

The Dolphins already have LB Channing Crowder on the shelf with an unspecified injury. Apparently the status of their starting left tackle is also up in the air for Sunday’s season opener.

Jake Long was wearing a knee brace at practice, according to the Associated Press and after stretching only rode a stationary bike during the team’s practice session Monday. Head coach Tony Sparano is not commenting on Long’s status for Sunday’s game. Long hurt his knee in the team’s final preseason game last Thursday.
