Kennedy re-signs with Vikes

Posted by Chris Brown on March 13, 2010 – 7:15 pm

Bills free agent visitor Jimmy Kennedy has wound up returning to the team he played with last season.

According to NFL.com the defensive tackle re-signed with Minnesota agreeing to a two-year deal worth $6 million.

The Vikings were desperate to re-sign Kennedy with their starting DTs Kevin Williams and Pat Williams embroiled in the STARCAPS case.

Both players are to face sentencing in May. Any kind of conviction is likely to result in some kind of discipline from the NFL.

With the prospect of both Williams being suspended for some portion of the 2010 season, made re-signing Kennedy a priority for the Vikings.

Kennedy tight with Big Pat

Posted by Chris Brown on March 12, 2010 – 1:03 pm

Having been his teammate for the past season and a half, Bills free agent visitor Jimmy Kennedy is very tight with Pat Williams.

Kennedy said when he told Williams he was coming to visit with the Bills that the former Bills DT couldn’t say enough good things about Buffalo.

“Pat loved this place,” said Kennedy. “I’m quite sure if he had an opportunity to come back here he would be here. He speaks highly of Buffalo and he loves the fans here. When I told him I was coming out here he told me to go up there and have fun and if you sign there good luck.”

Kennedy has a deep respect for Williams’ game and even indicated that he would wear Williams old number 93 if it was available and he signed here.

“If I come here and his old number is available I’ll consider changing to that number,” said Kennedy. “That’s how much respect I have for Pat. He’s like a father for the most part. Thirteen years at that nose guard spot, to get the recognition that he gets right now and to be 38 years old. He’s a beast and I love him to death.”

Number 93 however, is currently worn by Chris Ellis.

No other visits for Kennedy yet

Posted by Chris Brown on March 12, 2010 – 12:47 pm

Bills free agent visitor Jimmy Kennedy just spoke with Buffalobills.com and the WNY media. He said at this point in time he has no other visits lined up… yet.

Kennedy made it sound as if he was going to really hear the Bills out on what they have to offer him in terms of role, playing time and obviously contract. We’ve since updated our report of his visit with full comment from Kennedy. When I asked him if he had any other free agent visits lined up he left the door open.

“I’m not sure,” he said. “I’m taking it one team at a time, but I definitely have some interest out there. If things don’t work out here, we’ll be setting up to go to the next team. As of right now I don’t think it would be fair to Buffalo or wherever I go to say in three weeks I’ll be going to see ‘x’ team. So I’m keeping an open mind to see what it is that they can offer and the way I feel and if I’m comfortable here and I’ll take it from there.”

Kennedy said he is not ruling out returning to Minnesota. The Vikings have had contact with his agent, and I would think they’d be anxious to bring him back, knowing their two starting DTs are involved in the STARCAPS case and depending on the outcome could face league discipline in 2010.

Kennedy has the size

Posted by Chris Brown on March 12, 2010 – 11:19 am

Free agent visitor Jimmy Kennedy has the size to man the nose tackle spot in a 3-4.

At 6’5″ and 320 pounds he’s got the body to do it. The question is does Buffalo’s coaching staff see it the same way? I would think they do because they’ve got some veteran players to man the ends in this 3-4 scheme in Marcus Stroud and Spencer Johnson.

And though coach Gailey has said Kyle Williams will be a big part of what they do at nose tackle, it’s hard to believe they’re going to have him grind for 60 plays a game in there for 16 games.

Kennedy by most accounts of the people I spoke with in Minnesota had one of his better seasons last year. Granted he was playing with some very talented ends in Jared Allen and Ray Edwards, so he likely didn’t get as much attention inside on passing downs. But some observers are calling him a late bloomer.

If we get the opportunity to speak with him during his visit, we’ll pass it along here on Buffalobills.com.

Report: DT to visit Bills

Posted by Chris Brown on March 10, 2010 – 9:44 pm

A free agent defensive tackle will reportedly be visiting the Bills on Thursday.

NFL.com is reporting that Minnesota free agent defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy will be at One Bills Drive Thursday.

The 30-year old appeared in 13 games for the Vikings last season as a rotational player behind Kevin Williams and Pat Williams. At 6’5″ 320, Kennedy is likely considered a nose tackle candidate for the team’s new 3-4 defense. Stay tuned for official updates Thursday on Buffalobills.com.
