RB Bell left impression on Gailey

Posted by Chris Brown on September 3, 2010 – 3:27 pm

Bills head coach Chan Gailey and his staff have some roster decisions to make, not the least of which is at running back, where the Bills could keep four RBs and a FB.

Should they keep a fourth along with Fred Jackson, Marshawn Lynch and C.J. Spiller, Bell could be the guy after finishing the preseason among the league’s leading rushers.

“Joique Bell has been one of the more pleasant surprises,” said Gailey. “He’s done an excellent job. He’s a really good football player. He’s learned a lot. He was doing one thing in college and he’s had to learn the entire game here. And he’s done a great job picking it up and there will be some tough decisions for us.”

Bell and Chad Simpson look like the two main choices for that fourth back role.

No Spiller vs. Lions

Posted by Chris Brown on September 2, 2010 – 2:50 pm has learned that RB C.J. Spiller will not play in tonight’s preseason finale against the Lions in Detroit.

Head coach Chan Gailey has chosen not to dress Spiller simply to rest him up for the regular season. With Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch out the past two weeks, Spiller has endured a heavy workload as the primary back in each of the last two preseason games. Gailey would like to rest his top pick for the season opener.

Marshawn Lynch will get the start with the first unit tonight, but will not see more than the 12-14 reps that the rest of the starters will get because he’s still working his way back into game shape after returning to practice this week. That means Chad Simpson, Joique Bell and Andre Anderson should all see significant playing time this evening.

Here is the list of kick returners and punt returners for tonight’s game agains the Lions.

On kick return Joique Bell, Donald Jones and Chad Simpson will be the primary returners.

Could Mathews talks spark Spiller?

Posted by Chris Brown on July 31, 2010 – 6:35 am

Reports out of San Diego indicate that talks between the Chargers and 12th overall pick and RB Ryan Mathews are progressing well and a deal could be done before the weekend is out. Could it help move Spiller’s camp along in getting a deal done with the Bills?

According to the  San Diego Union-Tribune, talks between Mathews and the Chargers have progressed to the point where there is optimism a deal will be struck in a day or two. Mathews was the second running back taken in the draft three picks after Spiller.

It’s unclear if the Spiller camp is waiting to see what the second RB in the draft lands in terms of a deal before moving forward with their own. One thing is certain, C.J. Spiller would like to be practicing. spoke with rookie RB Joique Bell, a close friend of Spiller’s, who said he has been talking with Spiller by phone.

“Talking to him I know he wants to be here,” said Bell.

What started Bell’s uphill climb

Posted by Chris Brown on May 21, 2010 – 10:08 am

Bills RB Joique Bell, an undrafted rookie free agent, had the deck stacked against him before he even got out of high school because he was more willing to be a team player.

Bell was an accomplished running back for Benton Harbor high school, but right before his senior season started he had to make a position switch for the good of the team.

“I was supposed to be just the running back, but right before the season our quarterback ended up transferring to another school,” said Bell. “So they had to put me at quarterback. As a result I didn’t have much running back film, and it’s one of the main reasons I didn’t get recruited much by schools for running back.”

Bell as a high school senior still rushed for 1,171 yards and threw for just over a thousand too, but some schools saw him as a running quarterback instead of a running back.

In the end Division II Wayne State was his choice, and again despite ridiculous numbers and being named Division II Player of the Year, an appearance in the Senior Bowl and invite to the NFL combine, Bell still went undrafted.

It’s all to the Bills benefit now.
