Bills add OL Williams to practice squad

Posted by Chris Brown on October 23, 2012 – 4:25 pm

The Buffalo Bills added another offensive lineman to their eight-man practice squad Tuesday.

Buffalo signed free agent G Keith Williams. Williams is familiar with the Bills offense after spending most of last season on the club’s practice squad. He was signed as a futre free agent last January and spent the whole 2012 offseason with Buffalo before he was a final cut at the close of the preseason.

He appeared in all four of the Bills preseason games this past summer, working mainly at right guard. He’s a former sixth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Williams (6’5″ 330) fills the vacant spot on the practice squad left by C/G David Snow, who was promoted to the 53-man roster late last week. Buffalo now has three offensive linemen on their practice squad.

Jasper update

Posted by Chris Brown on August 11, 2012 – 9:44 pm

Head coach Chan Gailey was asked for an update on how G Mike Jasper is faring in camp and the preseason. Here was his response.

“Michael is struggling,” said Gailey. “Michael has got to learn his assignments. He’s got to learn to play physical every snap. A big, strong guy that’s got a lot of talent as we all know, but he’s got to be more physical and he’s got to continue to push through on assignments.”

It’s certainly going to be an uphill battle for Jasper to make the roster. Chad Rinehart is the primary reserve guard. Then there’s second-year man Colin Brown, who plays guard and center, sixth-round pick Mark Asper who plays guard and center, but has had his ups and downs too. Keith Williams is another guard who spent time on the team’s practice squad as well. There’s a lot of competition there.

Bills almost have to add an OL

Posted by Chris Brown on December 26, 2011 – 4:51 pm

Bills head coach Chan Gailey said he and GM Buddy Nix will discuss what action they take with respect to whether Kraig Urbik, Mike Caussin or Demetrius Bell go on injured reserve. Knowing Buffalo has just one reserve offensive lineman on the roster the Bills will almost have to put at least one of those three players on I-R to make room for another backup.

Most NFL clubs like to dress 7 offensive linemen for a game (5 starters, 2 reserves). Right now they’ve got 6, with Sam Young a backup tackle.

Buffalo has a pair of guards on the practice squad in Mike Jasper and Keith Williams. Presumably one of those players would be promoted to give Buffalo an extra interior lineman should another Bills lineman go down to injury in Sunday’s season finale.

“It was like a bear fight”

Posted by Chris Brown on February 25, 2011 – 6:46 pm

Nebraska offensive lineman Keith Williams was a three-year starter at guard for the Cornhuskers and projects as a fourth or fifth-round pick, but he feels he’s as NFL ready as they come after battling Ndamukong Suh in practice for two straight seasons.

“It was fun, it was like a bear fight,” said Williams. “You get after it. Competition is the best thing to make you better.”

When asked who won more often Williams was diplomatic.

“We had our battles up and down, back and forth. It gives you confidence that you can play in the NFL, but there’s still some growth needed in my game.”

Williams also said he had interviewed with the Packers and the Bills.
