RB Kevin Jones a free agent

Posted by Chris Brown on March 9, 2010 – 6:53 pm

RB Kevin Jones is available for hire.

Cut by the Bears late Tuesday, on the heels of the free agent signing of RB Chester Taylor, Jones is free to shop his services. Jones was a free agent visitor of the Bills last offseason before they ultimately signed Dominic Rhodes.

It’s unclear if the Bills would be interested with a new front office regime in place.

Jones’ injury history only got longer last season when he suffered torn ligaments in his ankle, though he is reportedly medically cleared at this point. NFL teams that are interested are going to have their doctors examine him with a fine tooth comb.

Jauron on why the interest in FA RBs

Posted by Chris Brown on March 11, 2009 – 10:57 pm

Thus far this offseason Buffalo has hosted RBs Fred Taylor, Kevin Jones and DeShaun Foster. So why the interest with the likes of Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson on the roster? Bills head coach Dick Jauron stated that they’re looking for a number three back.

“We’re looking for a third guy and he may be on our roster right now, but we wanted to make sure that we covered the bases in free agency,” said Jauron. “We brought in a couple of really good veteran running backs that we thought would fit us really well. They opted to go other places, but we’d like to have that in place. We’ll keep looking. It doesn’t mean we’re dissatisfied with the people that are behind Marshawn (Lynch) and Freddie (Jackson), but we’ll keep our eyes open. We love that combination. We’d like to take a little bit of pressure off of them.”

If that’s truly the motivation you can understand why players like Taylor and Jones chose to sign elsewhere. They’re too accomplished to take on a #3 role. Taylor signed with New England, while Jones re-signed with Chicago.

Personally I think Omon is a pretty good catch for a number three back.

RB Jones re-signs with Chicago

Posted by Chris Brown on March 7, 2009 – 3:47 am

He visit with the Bills lasted longer than expected Thursday, so one had to think there was at least some talk about playing in Buffalo. But in the end Jones chose to re-sign with Chicago.

In a way it’s an understandable decision. With the Bears he is the unquestioned number two and one injury away from being the starter. In Buffalo there was a great deal of talent with a longer track record on this roster than him that have proven themselves. His situation likely would have been a little less certain.

He didn’t sign for big money, so I have to believe he sees a greater chance at playing time in Chicago.

One key question about Galloway and Jones

Posted by Chris Brown on March 5, 2009 – 3:51 pm

With WR Joey Galloway and RB Kevin Jones both visiting One Bills Drive today, it’s nice to see Buffalo seeking out other options after Laveranues Coles sign with Cincinnati. However, the one question that every team interested in Galloway and Jones is asking is a difficult one.

Can they still be dynamic players?

Galloway had 3 straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons before last year’s foot injury kept him on the sidelines. At age 37 can he still be a difference maker? That’s a tough one. Everyone has to hit the wall at some point, but Galloway could be the exception to the rule.

I tend to think that Jones will be given more the benefit of the doubt after getting through last season healthy (though he barely saw action) because he’s just 26 years old. Some NFL talent evaluators think he may finally be ready to return to the form that helped him rush for over 1,100 yards as a rookie with Detroit.

But these are the tough questions that NFL GM’s have to answer, and the answers are sometimes harder when you’re eager to improve the quality of talent on your football team.

Kevin Jones to visit One Bills Drive?

Posted by Chris Brown on March 3, 2009 – 10:31 pm

According to Pro Football Talk, Chicago FA RB Kevin Jones is scheduled to visit the Bills on Wednesday. No official word from One Bills Drive at this point.

The Bears have already reportedly made an offer to Jones in an effort to re-sign him (Chicago Sun-Times), but a handful of teams have expressed interest in Jones besides the Bills including the Bengals, Browns, Jets and Bucs, although with Cincy re-signing Cedric Benson and Tampa signing Derrick Ward, those teams may not be as interested.

Buffalo has already made their interest in running back depth known with Fred Taylor visiting last week. Taylor has since signed with New England.

With Fred Taylor no longer an option, NFL Network’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Bills have expressed interest in Chicago FA RB Kevin Jones.

Jones has also reportedly drawn interest from the Jets, Rams and Bucs.
