How Bills coaches help Watkins make plays

Posted by Chris Brown on September 19, 2014 – 10:24 am

Offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, head coach Doug Marrone, Senior Offensive Assistant Jim Hostler and QBs coach Todd Downing are the principle players in putting together the offensive game plan each week. What they’ve done to make use of Sammy Watkins’ talents has been effectively broken down by Matt Bowen, former NFL safety, who finished his career in Buffalo.

Bowen, who writes for Bleacher Report, effectively illustrates how the Bills offensive staff has made use of Watkins’ superb short and intermediate route running to get him the ball in the open field.

Wednesday night’s John Murphy Show

Posted by johnmurphyshow on October 31, 2012 – 5:51 pm

We’ll re-connect with an old friend and a familiar face to Bills fans tonight on The John Murphy Show.

Former Bills Head Coach Wade Phillips joins us live at 7:20pm.  He’s in his second season as the Defensive Coordinator for the Houston Texans, the Bills opponents this Sunday.  Since leaving Buffalo, Wade has run succesful defenses at Atlanta, San Diego and Houston.  And of course, he was the Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys for a couple of years.

At 8pm, we’ll talk with Bills LB Kelvin Sheppard.  He’s right in the middle of the struggling Buffalo defense, and we’ll talk with him about Buffalo’s problems stopping the run, and the challenge presented by the Houston Texans.

Former Bills Safety Matt Bowen joins us at 8:20pm.  He’s now a columnist for The National Football Post, and he does a great job breaking down video using’s new “All-22” feature.  Bowen did an outstanding job breaking down Chris Johnson’s 83-yard touchdown run against the Bills two weeks ago, and we’ll ask him about that.

We’ve got the Bills news of the day, plus opportunities for phone calls from fans as well.

The John Murphy Show airs weeknights from 7pm-9pm on the flagship station of the Buffalo Bills, WGR Sports Radio 550.

WR class lacking burners

Posted by Chris Brown on January 26, 2012 – 10:50 am

The wide receiver class in this year’s draft offers a lot of size, but at the top of the board there aren’t many speed merchants, and that could impact where Buffalo seeks to find a worthwhile addition at that position this offseason.

Former NFL safety and National Football Post columnist Matt Bowen believes there are receiving prospects that can help NFL offenses, but they’re not going to be getting behind defenses all that much.

“A lot of these big receivers this year at 6’3” or 6’4” are not super explosive guys,” Bowen said. “But if you want one of them inside running breaking routes like a slant or a dig or a deep curl they’re tough to defend.”

Based on what Bills GM Buddy Nix said at his end of the season press conference it seems as though Buffalo is looking for a player with a bit more to offer in the way of speed on the outside knowing Stevie Johnson and David Nelson (who were 1 and 2 in receptions last season) aren’t burners. That’s why there appears to be a good chance the Bills will look to free agency to address that position.

High praise for George

Posted by Chris Brown on March 2, 2011 – 1:34 pm

George Wilson might not be a household name in the NFL, but he certainly has the respect of his NFL brethren including some now retired players.

Former safety Matt Bowen, who spent one season with the Bills injured, tipped his hat to Wilson and the contract he signed Tuesday.
