Leinart laments performance

Posted by Chris Brown on August 30, 2013 – 1:01 am

He was excited just to be back in the practice setting of an NFL camp, but with just three days to absorb enough of Buffalo’s offense to execute a finite amount of plays in Thursday night’s preseason finale proved difficult.

Leinart, who went 3-for-10 passing for 11 yards with two interceptions, was honest in assessing his performance.

“I will not sit here and make any excuses,” he said. “I could have played better and I didn’t, and you just move on. I was
hoping maybe to get in there in the second half and redeem myself.  But you cant turn the ball over in this league and expect to win.  It’s tough, but I was thankful to be here.  We’ll see what happens.  Obviously, after that performance, it can’t be anything good. I wouldn’t think but we’ll see.”

Head coach Doug Marrone admitted that it was far from an ideal circumstance, but one that was out of everyone’s control based on the timing of the injuries Buffalo sustained at the quarterback position. Leinart made no excuses.

“I haven’t played in a while, the speed of the game and all that stuff, but just being a professional, being a football player,” he said. “Coming in here I expect more out of myself, I have expectations for myself.  Whether I was here for three days or three years, you cant do that. There’s not a lot to be said. It is what it is, you just move on and see what happens. I’m just grateful to have a fun week here. And who knows, who knows what will happen.”

Marrone won’t factor in Leinart’s past

Posted by Chris Brown on August 28, 2013 – 7:08 am

For former Heisman trophy winner Matt Leinart, his NFL career up until now has not been what he, or most that watched him as a college quarterback, envisioned for him as a pro. Staying healthy and performing with consistency on the field have proved difficult to capture at times for the veteran signal caller. But none of that matters as head coach Doug Marrone sees it.

“I’m trying to look at what he is now,” said Marrone. “It’s the same thing that I do with all the players. Someone’s past history positive or negative, I want to see how he produces in what we ask him to do. That’s how I judge him because if you go the other way you assume or you have a vision in your mind of how the player is supposed to play and if he doesn’t you’ll think you need to get another player. I don’t think you can do that. That’s the way I’ve always done it.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on his twitter account that the Bills were one of three teams that have discussed trading for Arizona QB Matt Leinart along with the Raiders and Giants. That report is erroneous. has confirmed that the Bills have not had any discussions with the Cardinals in regards to Matt Leinart and aren’t anticipating any in the future. The report is simply not true.
