Posted by johnmurphyshow on November 20, 2013 – 4:46 pm

It’s been a major topic of discussion since the controversial ending to Monday’s Patriots-Panthers game. Tonight on The John Murphy Show, we’ll talk about the state of officiating with Ben Austro from Football
Austro’s website chronicles the highs and lows of NFL officials, who he says are “the most vilified when calls go against our team. But the men in the striped shirts are the most studied at their game..”
We’ll take calls on NFL officiating tonight when Austro joins us live at 830pm.
The John Murphy Show airs weeknights 7-9pm on the flagship station of the Buffalo Bills, WGR Sports Radio 550 in Buffalo, and on Sportsradio 950 ESPN Radio in Rochester.

NFL on hiring replacement officials

Posted by Chris Brown on June 4, 2012 – 10:53 am

The NFL released a statement today (Monday) on their next course of action after failed Sunday negotiations with the NFL Referees Association failed to make any progress on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The statement read in part as follows.

Negotiations with the NFL Referees Association on a new collective bargaining agreement remain unresolved and the previous CBA has expired. Therefore, in order to ensure that there is no disruption to NFL games this season we will proceed immediately with the hiring and training of replacement officials.

Our goal is to maintain the highest quality of officiating for our teams, players, and fans, including proper enforcement of the playing rules and efficient management of our games.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the NFL  will not recruit officials from the BCS in college and will apparently seek elite retired college officials, small college conference officials and possibly even Arena League officials as replacements for the 2012 season, unless the impasse can be broken.

NFL officials are in

Posted by Chris Brown on July 30, 2009 – 2:22 pm

The league’s zebras have arrived at Bills training camp.

The officials spend a few days at NFL training camps to re-acquaint the players and coaches as to what will be called a penalty on Sundays in watching their competitive play in practice.

They’re also trying to get themselves prepared for the speed of the game again after a six month layoff.
