Rex would give Goodwin green light for Olympics

Posted by Chris Brown on August 7, 2015 – 5:05 pm

There was a lot of debate about whether Bills head coach Rex Ryan would have a problem with Marquise Goodwin competing in the World Championship in Beijing, China later this month had he qualified for the team. He just missed qualification, but earned a silver medal in the Pan Am Games last month. Ryan said had he the World Championship team for the US he would’ve let him go compete.

“Yes we would’ve let him go no question,” said Ryan. “He had a chance to represent our country, then he comes back and represents our franchise. This guy is one of the fastest guys in the world and we’re proud of that fact and he’ll come out here and be ready to roll. We know what he is as a player and he’s all here. But we’ll see how it goes next spring.”

When asked why it wouldn’t bother him if Goodwin had to miss some time for an international track and field event, Ryan sees one benefiting the other.

“You’re competing and all that stuff, but he’s going to run anyway. He’s going to do those types of things. It’s just an unbelievable opportunity for a young man to be in those games, the Pan Am Games,” said Ryan. “We’ll see. Hopefully he gets an opportunity to represent our country in the Olympics. That would be terrific. It is in Brazil. I would definitely go to that one and I’ll see him also.”

The Bills receiver was asked multiple times by the media if he considers himself a football player or a track star. Every time Goodwin has labeled himself an athlete.

He went on to say that his commitment is to the Bills.

As successful as Goodwin was with limited training it will make next year’s Olympic qualifying an interesting proposition for Goodwin.
