Simms, Gannon weigh in on Marrone hire

Appearing on the CBS Sports Monday QB show, former NFL QBs Phil Simms and Rich Gannon weighed in on the hiring of Doug Marrone by the Bills. Here were their comments.

Simms: He has coached under Sean Payton and Bill Parcells. He’s been in the NFL. They say he’s ready for the job. I know 25-25 (at Syracuse) does not sound like a great record, but that program was completely in the gutter when he went up there. He did a wonderful job.

Gannon: That was a mess when you took the job at Syracuse. They had won 10 games the previous four years with Greg Robinson. He was a miracle-worker up in Syracuse. He won there and I think he’ll put together a good staff in Buffalo. I think he can win there with the talent that they have.

Simms: The Bills are real

Posted by Chris Brown on November 4, 2011 – 8:33 am

CBS football analyst Phil Simms is going to be commentating on the Bills-Jets game Sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium. He sees a difficult game for the Jets knowing they have to go on the road where they’re 0-3 so far this season and do it at a place that’s once again become a big home field advantage.

“The Jets coming off of a bye week and going on the road is a big deal,” Simms said. “The league has shown us this season that the bye week has been a detriment to a lot of teams. So can the Jets overcome that? Going to Buffalo is tough. The Buffalo Bills are real. I believe. They’re 5-2 and the way they are doing it is impressive. Ryan Fitzpatrick is for real. Fred Jackson is a star. I’ve gone up there in years past and even when they weren’t a good team, in that stadium and with that crowd, they’re always tough.  It’s going to be a tough test for the Jets.”

Among the matchups Simms is most intrigued by is Buffalo’s spread offense against the talented Jets corners.

“They have a couple things that are going to be great to watch,” he said. “Darrelle Revis against Steve Johnson and Kyle Wilson, Antonio Cromartie against the spread offense. Buffalo’s offense is extremely varied. I can’t imagine what it would be like to try to defend them because they do such much. How the Jets defense is going to attack against the Bills’ offense is going to be very interesting.”

Simms also provided perspective on the magnitude of Sunday’s game knowing it carries a lot of weight for both clubs.

“I never thought at the start of this season that I would be saying the Jets going to Buffalo was going to be a big game or an important game for the playoffs,” said Simms.  “But we are in that stretch now. These games are important.  It’s a divisional game. This game is going to be quite exciting. This might be the game of the week.”

Simms calls Bills “hustlers,” “tough”

Posted by Chris Brown on October 13, 2011 – 4:49 pm

CBS NFL analyst Phil Simms gave his take on the 2011 Bills in anticipation of his broadcast of the game between the Bills and Giants Sunday at MetLife Stadium with Jim Nantz.

“The thing that has caught me by surprise about Buffalo is their toughness. The Bills are tough,” said Simms. “They’re hungry. They’re eager. Their hustle is phenomenal. It’s not perfect, they give up a lot of plays, but they never quit hustling. It’s fun to watch. It’s a credit to Chan Gailey that they play hard for him.”
