Main purpose of pre-draft visits

Posted by Chris Brown on April 16, 2013 – 11:17 am

The Bills conducted 30 pre-draft visits at One Bills Drive with prospects from this year’s draft class and did so over the span of just 10 days. The scouting department already knew an awful lot about all of the prospects that walked through the doors of Buffalo’s team facility in early April, but there’s one main thing they’re trying to get a gauge on with each of the prospects when they come on a pre-draft visit.

Bills GM Buddy Nix, who joined Bills play-by-play man John Murphy on the John Murphy show last night and explained the main purpose of bringing in players on pre-draft visits.

“You’ll usually bring a guy in and go through all the mental stuff where you get him discussing scheme and see how much he can retain, how quick he can retain it and sometimes that makes a difference (in their draft grade),” said Nix. ‘In this business you don’t have much time to get it done and while guys get cut sometimes for physical deficiencies, sometimes they get cut because they can’t get it mentally. And that’s the big thing we’re trying to find out.”

WR Hunter has pre-draft visit with Lions

Posted by Chris Brown on March 7, 2013 – 4:55 pm

The Bills are in going to be in the market for a wide receiver come draft weekend, but so will a lot of other clubs. That list of teams includes the Detroit Lions apparently as they have already begun their pre-draft visit schedule hosting Tennessee WR Justin Hunter Thursday.

That according to their team website. Hunter told that he’d love to line up opposite Calvin Johnson.

“I know they have two people on (Calvin Johnson) every time he lines up and people base their game plan on him,” Hunter said. “It would be nice (playing next to a guy like that) because usually that happens to me. I know how it feels. I think one-on-one coverage would be great. I’d be excited for that.”

After the disastrous end of the Lions’ relationship with WR Titus Young, who was suspended and eventually released, Detroit is in the market for another receiving talent to complement Johnson and Ryan Broyles.

DE Vernon a sleeper?

Posted by Chris Brown on April 18, 2012 – 8:48 am

He played at a major college program, but he hasn’t gotten the same pub as some of the household name talents in the 2012 draft class. Miami DE Olivier Vernon won’t come off the board on the first two days of the draft in all likelihood, but he could be a very good value on day 3.

“Vernon to me, I think he’s a better player than maybe the perception, and at 6’3″, 262, I think he played defensive end, can play outside linebacker, can do a little bit of both,” said ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay. “Has some stiffness, there’s no question.  He’s not a great athlete, and his production didn’t always match up, and I’ve heard some things, is he mature enough, how does he work and all those things.  But if he is focused and doing the right things and working at it and 100 percent dedicated to football, he’s well built, solid, strong, shows some quickness off the line, and I think he has a chance to make an impact as a pass rusher at the next level.”

The problem for Vernon is he’s very raw. He was caught up in the Nevin Shapiro scandal at Miami and was suspended for the first six games in 2011. That’s why it was surprising to see him declare early for the draft. But he was a highly touted prep player and has talent. Scouts just have to be convinced that there’s long term potential there.

He’s the kind of player that the Giants and Steelers usually draft because they have starters they can rely on while grooming a kid like this. Most draft services have him forecast anywhere from late round 5 to round 7. He also made a pre-draft visit with the Bills for what it’s worth.

OL Glenn a pre-draft visitor

Posted by Chris Brown on April 9, 2012 – 8:31 am

As you’ll see on the home page of, Georgia OL Cordy Glenn is our latest prospect preview in anticipation of the 2012 NFL draft. The Bills made sure to get familiar with this projected first-round prospect.

Glenn was a pre-draft visitor of the Bills late last month has learned. Glenn only has one year of experience at left tackle, but in the challenging SEC conference Glenn showed promising improvement as the season went along and has surprising agility for a 6’5″ 345-pound man.

The big debate between those in scouting circles is whether he truly is a left tackle in the NFL or better suited to play guard where he lined up for 28 of his 50 career starts for the Bulldogs. You can get a look at him and the other offensive tackle prospects in our position preview at the media center.

‘Cuse DE Jones visiting

Posted by Chris Brown on April 4, 2012 – 11:49 am has learned that Syracuse defensive end and Rochester native Chandler Jones is one of four players visiting One Bills Drive on a pre-draft visit today.

Jones is a favorite of ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay. Though he doesn’t have great timed speed (4.87 40-time at Combine) he does have good burst and strength. That along with a strong work ethic makes Jones an attractive prospect with McShay calling him “the most underrated prospect in the entire draft.”

“Everyone says the production is not there and all of that, but I think at 6’5″ with the potential to get to 270 pounds…  he’s proven can he play the left side, the right side.  He even can drop in coverage.  He’s shown that on tape at times,” said McShay. “I just think he’s strong.  He’s physical.  He also has enough athleticism to get after the quarterback.”

McShay went on to say that he thought Jones would be a solid value as a late first-round pick in the mid to upper 20’s overall.
