Why Meachem chose Chargers

Posted by Chris Brown on March 14, 2012 – 7:18 am

Before anyone criticizes the Bills for not landing free agent WR Robert Meachem they need to consider the factors in the decision.

Meachem his entire career has had to take a back seat to the likes of Marques Colston, the clear number one receiver for the Saints. This past season Meachem was knocked down two more pegs in the pecking order with TE Jimmy Graham and RB Darren Sproles leading the team in receptions with 99 and 86 respectively.

No one played more snaps (877) among the receiving targets for the Saints last season and had fewer receptions than Meachem (40). So when the Chargers presented the opportunity to be a bona fide number one wideout in their offense, knowing Vincent Jackson had signed with Tampa, for him it was probably an easy decision assuming the money in San Diego was comparable to the money being offered by Buffalo.

With Stevie Johnson as the number one in Buffalo, Meachem knew at best he was a number two wideout.

Add in the opportunity to play with a Pro Bowl QB in San Diego in Philip Rivers, in a traditional vertical offense where Jackson as the previous #1 has the highest yards per catch average for a #1 wideout over the past four years (2008-2011) with 18 yards per catch and you see the extras that San Diego had to offer.

Best of rest at WR

Posted by Chris Brown on March 14, 2012 – 6:04 am

With Robert Meachem choosing to sign with San Diego late last night the  Bills may or may not shift their focus at receiver to the next best available wideouts.

Buffalo may choose to focus all their energies on Mario Williams first and express interest by phone with receivers still on the market. Among the best of the still available wideouts are Brandon Lloyd, who is scheduled to visit the 49ers Wednesday, the Cowboys Laurent Robinson and Giants free agent Mario Manningham.

Lloyd might not be what the Bills are looking for at 30-years old. Manningham is just 25-years old and grew up in neighboring Ohio and is coming off a big time performance in the Super Bowl. No word on any free agent visits for him though.

Robinson was visiting with the Jaguars Tuesday, in part because his mother lives two hours from Jacksonville. The Jets and Cardinals have also expressed interest.

Report: Meachem takes deal with SD

Posted by Chris Brown on March 14, 2012 – 5:42 am

Despite flying up to Buffalo for a Tuesday evening visit with the Bills, Saints free agent receiver Robert Meachem has reportedly accepted a deal with another AFC club.

According to USA Today, Meachem has agreed to a four-year deal with the San Diego Chargers.

Per the San Diego Union-Tribune the four-year pact for Meachem is worth $25.9 million with $14M guaranteed.

What likely happened was Meachem saw the opportunity to be San Diego’s number one receiver once Vincent Jackson left to sign with Tampa Bay earlier Tuesday after the free agent market opened. In Buffalo Meachem wouldn’t be the top target with Stevie Johnson in the fold. This is a perfect example of the ebbs and flows of free agency that no one can predict despite the best efforts of GM Buddy Nix and company to land the free agent receiver.

Meachem’s snap count 2011

Posted by Chris Brown on March 13, 2012 – 7:56 pm

With Robert Meachem a distinct possibility as an addition to Buffalo’s receiving corps we thought we’d take a closer look at his snap count figures in New Orleans and how his receiving numbers compared to the rest of the Saints’ passing targets in 2011.

With an assist from ProFootballFocus, Meachem was on the field for a surprising 877 snaps last season, more than any of the other receivers on the New Orleans roster (see below).

 WR  Robert Meachem 877
WR  Devery Henderson 863
 WR  Marques Colston 801
 WR  Lance Moore 422
 WR  Adrian Arrington 91
 WR  Courtney Roby 6

As far as receiving numbers go in the Saints offense Meachem was sixth in receptions with 40, in an offense where Drew Brees really spreads the ball around. Proof of that came in the fact that the team’s top two receiving targets were TE Jimmy Graham (99 rec.) and RB Darren Sproles (86 rec.).

Perhaps most encouraging is Meacham had the second-best reception-to-touchdown ratio for New Orleans. Lance Moore had a touchdown reception for every 6.5 catches he made last season. Meachem had a touchdown catch for every 6.66 catches he made.

Will other FA WR deals impact Meachem?

Posted by Chris Brown on March 13, 2012 – 7:31 pm

The wide receiver position has seen some of the most signings on day one of free agency. That could be a plus for the Bills’ efforts to land free agent visitor Robert Meachem.

NFL Network is reporting that San Diego free agent WR Vincent Jackson has found a new destination agreeing to terms with Tampa Bay. He joins Marques Colston (re-signed, New Orleans), Pierre Garcon (Washington), Josh Morgan (Washington) and the trade of Brandon Marshall from Miami to Chicago. With potential destinations disappearing by the hour, it could prompt Meachem to take what is expected to be a very good offer from Buffalo.

San Diego and St. Louis are two other NFL clubs reportedly interested in Meachem.

Report: Rams, Chargers after Meachem

Posted by Chris Brown on March 13, 2012 – 5:18 pm

Even though the Bills are going to get first crack at landing free agent WR Robert Meachem there are two other clubs reportedly after the Saints free agent as well.

Michael Gehlken@UTgehlken Robert Meachem is in Buffalo, but #Chargers have reached out and inquired about the wide receiver, league source says. No visit planned yet

Jeff Duncan @JeffDuncanTP And now the Chargers are reportedly showing interest in Robert Meachem. If you’re keeping track, that makes BUF, STL & SD so far.
