Lions in gun the whole game?

Posted by Chris Brown on November 13, 2010 – 2:39 pm

With QB Shaun Hill recovering from a broken left forearm, there is a realistic chance that the Lions signal caller plays the whole game from the shotgun formation.

The jarring effect of having the ball snapped into your non-throwing hand may not be the best idea for Hill, and so it has been speculated that Hill will take all the snaps in Sunday’s game in the shotgun formation. The only other option would be to switch his hands and take the brunt of the snap impact with his throwing hand. Shotgun however, seems to be the most likely scenario. asked Bills head coach Chan Gailey if that provides his defense with any kind of advantage if they go shotgun exclusively Sunday.

“You have to think pass obviously,” said Gailey. “But I’m sure they’ll have some run game set up for that whether it’s reverses, hand offs or draws. They’ve been a big draw/screen team anyway so that really is not anything new for them. But if they’re in the gun you just adjust on the move. We’ve seen it from them, but not for a lot of snaps. It’ll be interesting to see how our defense needs to adjust once we get to game time.”

Lions Hill likes TEs

Posted by Chris Brown on November 12, 2010 – 10:38 am

Lions QB Shaun Hill, who will start in place of the injured Matt Stafford against the Bills this Sunday, has a propensity to throw to Detroit tight ends Tony Scheffler and Brandon Pettigrew.

As the Detroit News’ Chris McCosky points out, in the five starts that Hill has made in place of Stafford this season, he has thrown to the tight ends 78 times. That’s better than 15 pass attempts per game to his tight ends. Granted, WR Nate Burleson was out of the lineup for a good portion of the time Hill was playing, and has caught fire of late in the Lions passing game.

But knowing Buffalo’s struggles in covering tight ends, it would not be surprising to see Hill looking their way early and often against Buffalo on Sunday.

QB Hill to start for Lions

Posted by Chris Brown on November 10, 2010 – 2:21 pm

Lions backup QB Shaun Hill will start for the Lions on Sunday.

That according to USA Today, who quoted head coach Jim Schwartz as saying that “barring any setbacks” Hill would get the start.

Hill is coming off a broken forearm in his non-throwing arm suffered in Week 6, but took first team reps on Wednesday. Drew Stanton will back him up. Starter Matt Stafford is expected to be unfit in any capacity to be active for Sunday’s game at Buffalo.

Shaun Hill at QB for Lions

Posted by Chris Brown on November 10, 2010 – 12:43 pm

It looks like the early favorite to start for the Lions this week at QB is backup Shaun Hill. Lions beat reporter Tom Kowalski is reporting from Lions practice that Hill is taking first team reps with the offense.

Recovering from a broken forearm, Hill is not taking snaps and is handing off with just his left hand per Kowalski. Head coach Jim Schwartz wants to see what his signal callers can and cannot do before making a final call on who starts at QB on Sunday at Buffalo.
