Carpenter closing on Christie

Posted by Chris Brown on December 25, 2013 – 10:05 am

Bills kicker Dan Carpenter has put together one heck of a year. With one game remaining he’ll have a chance to set the franchise record for more field goals made in a single season.

Carpenter is currently 31-34 on field goal attempts this year, good for the second most accurate kicking season in team annals (91.2%). If he puts just three attempts through the uprights Sunday at New England he’ll break Steve Christie’s mark set in 1998 when he made 33 field goals.

Carpenter is also an impressive 13-16 from 40-yards plus this season (81.25%), which is already better than Christie’s 40-yard plus percentage in his record setting season (10-14, 71.4%).

Here’s a look at the top three seasons of most field goals made in franchise history.

Lindell a lock for all-time scorer

Posted by Chris Brown on February 7, 2012 – 1:24 pm

Bills kicker Rian Lindell has a brand new contract as he re-upped with Buffalo Tuesday. He also now stands a good chance of setting a brand new franchise record.

With 878 points in a Bills uniform Lindell is in striking distance of Steve Christie’s franchise scoring record of 1,011 points. Not counting this past season in which he played in just eight games, Lindell has averaged almost 102 points a season (101.75) over the last eight years. Just 133 points behind Christie, if Lindell stays healthy he should pass Christie for first place on the all-time scoring list come the middle of the 2013 season.

Lindell already holds the team record for career FG percentage (82.93%), consecutive PATs (225), single-season field goal percentage (92%, 2006) and consecutive field goals made (18).

Moorman credits good coaching

Posted by Chris Brown on February 2, 2010 – 5:43 pm

Bills punter Brian Moorman, who was named to the league’s All-Decade Team made sure to credit his coaches for his success.

“That’s part of the reason why I was chosen,” said Moorman. “I had good coaching the last nine seasons in Danny (Smith) and Bobby (April).”

Now Moorman will make another transition to new special teams coach Bruce DeHaven.

“I’m looking forward to working with him,” Moorman said. “I’ve heard nothing but good things about him from Steve Christie, Chris Mohr and Steve Tasker.”

Every time a player has a new position coach there is a feeling out process, but having been through it before and being an established player Moorman is confident they’ll be able to get on the same page quickly.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve had to,” said Moorman of getting used to a new position coach after having Bobby April the past six seasons. “Normally whenever a coach inherits a veteran, they’re normally hands off when what you’ve been doing has been working. We’ll pick each other’s brain and find out what works for him and what works for me.”

DeHaven is in a good position to succeed quickly under Chan Gailey with a veteran kicker and punter as well as proven return talent and an up and coming long snapper.

Rian Lindell had eight points in Sunday’s win over Carolina moving him into some exclusive territory on the Bills all-time scoring list.

The Bills kicker now has 674 points in a Bills uniform putting him in sole possession of second place on the team’s all-time list behind all-time leading scorer Steve Christie (1,011).

Lindell moved past Scott Norwood (670).

Christie called Lindell

Posted by Chris Brown on December 24, 2008 – 5:02 pm

Rian Lindell, who is closing in on Steve Christie’s single season field goal record, got a call of support after his game-winning miss against Cleveland on Monday night football from the Bills all-time leading scorer.

“He gave me a call after the Cleveland game and left a voice mail and told me to keep my head up,” said Lindell. “That was nice of him to do that. I run into him every now and then.”

Since that phone call Lindell is a solid 11-13 on field goal attempts including his 3-3 outing this past Sunday in the win at Denver, with his most impressive probably being the 49-yarder when the football was more like a frozen rock in the 17 degree temps during the game.

Lindell is the most accurate kicker in team history and obviously has the respect of Christie, who was probably the most clutch kicker in team annals.
