Bills blackouts few & far between of late

Posted by Chris Brown on March 23, 2015 – 3:20 pm

The NFL’s owners have voted to scrap the TV blackout rule for the 2015 season at their owners meetings in Arizona today. With the blackout rule lifted, at least for this season, we thought we’d look back at just how many games were blacked out over the past decade.

Believe it or not Bills fans that like to watch games from the comfort of their own home have not been the victim of TV blackouts all that often over the last 10 years. Here’s a look at the year-by-year blackout counts for the Bills since 2005.

Year Blackouts
2014 0
2013 1
2012 2
2011 3
2010 3
2009 0
2008 0
2007 0
2006 4
2005 0
 Total 13

So since 2012 there have been a total of just three blackouts, none of which occurred last season. The 2014 year was the first since 2009 that there were no blackouts. For 2015 at least it won’t be an issue.

In 2014 there was not a single game blacked out in the league, which may have helped to prompt the lifting of the rule.

NFL blackout rule going away for 2015

Posted by Chris Brown on March 23, 2015 – 2:35 pm

There’s an early headline coming out of the NFL owners meetings in Arizona and it concerns the TV blackout rule.

According to a number of reports the blackout rule has been done away with by the owners for the 2015 regular season.

The policy had long required that games be sold out 72 hours prior to kickoff to lift a television blackout in that team’s TV market for home games.

1,600 tickets left for Sunday’s game

Posted by Chris Brown on September 11, 2013 – 10:05 am

The Bills Week 2 matchup with Carolina on Sunday still has tickets available. Bills President and CEO Russ Brandon laid out the numbers and plan for this week with the blackout deadline approaching on Thursday at 1 pm.

“We do have some tickets to move,” said Brandon, who appeared on the Howard Simon show on Bills flagship station WGR Sportsradio 550. “We have about 1,600 tickets left remaining for the game. The deadline is Thursday at 1 pm. Tickets are moving and we’re confident we’ll be able to get the game sold out.”

When asked if the team would buy out the remaining tickets to make it a sellout to get the game televised, Brandon said that won’t happen.

“No, the plan is to sell every ticket we can,” he said. “Our fans have done a great job stepping up, but we need to move through these tickets. We’ll be selling right through kickoff because we will have some visiting (team ticket) returns probably on Friday and Saturday. So we’ll have tickets right up to kickoff.”

When asked how confident he is in getting the game on TV, Brandon believes it will happen.

“I’m fairly confident,” he said. “Actually I’m more than fairly confident. I think we’ll get it done. The sales staff is doing an excellent job and the fans have done a good job the first couple of days this week and we’ve got a lot going on with the Wall of Fame ceremony Sunday as well.”

Bills game on TV Sunday

Posted by Chris Brown on December 23, 2010 – 1:54 pm

The Bills game will be available to all fans in Western New York Sunday thanks to a last minute ticket purchase by a local restauranteur.

Russ Salvatore of Russell’s Steaks, Chops and More and ardent Bills fan, purchased the remaining unsold tickets to Sunday’s game between the Bills and Patriots before the 1 pm league blackout deadline to ensure that the game would air on TV Christmas weekend in Western New York.

“I bought the remaining tickets so the Bills could be televised locally for our community, and so that some of the less fortunate could enjoy going to the game,” said Salvatore. “This is a Christmas present to the community, and I wish everyone in Buffalo a Happy Holidays!  It feels good to do it, I love doing it and this comes from the heart.”

The remaining tickets will be distributed to various military and local youth charitable organizations in the Western New York community.
