OL Smith signs with Texans

Posted by Chris Brown on March 10, 2010 – 8:39 pm

Free agent offensive linemen Wade Smith visited three teams in the span of five days, including Buffalo, but Smith has decided on the team that’s closest to home.

Smith signed with the Texans late Wednesday. That according to the Associated Press, which reported it to be a four-year deal with $5.25M guaranteed and paying out $3M in year one of the contract.

Smith is a Dallas native, and likely played a factor in his decision to sign with Houston. The free agent guard/center also visited with Arizona.

OL Smith in AZ tonight

Posted by Chris Brown on March 9, 2010 – 5:06 pm

Apparently free agent OL Wade Smith does not arrive in Arizona for a free agent visit until Tuesday evening.

Smith, who has visited the Bills and the Texans, will not begin his visit with the Cardinals until late Tuesday. That according to reporter Darren Urban. That means the free agent visit with the Cards won’t get underway until tonight at the earliest and likely stretch into Wednesday.

What Texans see in OL Smith

Posted by Chris Brown on March 8, 2010 – 9:51 pm

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak talked with about what they like about OL Wade Smith.

Here’s what Kubiak likes about Smith.

“(Versatility) is the biggest thing with him,” Kubiak told “I’ve chased this kid a couple of times. I chased him in Denver, and now I get a chance here in Houston. He can play a lot of spots.

“We see him as an inside player. We want him to come compete at the center/guard position for our football team. We think that’s going to be a very competitive position for our team this year, so we’ll see what he thinks of it.”

So much like the Bills, Houston sees him as a versatile interior option that has plenty of starting experience. But he left Houston Monday night without a contract.

Texans trying to sign Smith

Posted by Chris Brown on March 8, 2010 – 8:55 pm

The Houston Texans, who completed their free agent visit with OL Wade Smith Monday, were still trying to sign him, but apparently nothing is imminent.

That according to the Houston Chronicle Texans beat reporter John McClain.

McClain_on_NFL: Texans are still trying to sign Leigh Bodden and Wade Smith but nothing will happen tonight.

We’ll see what Tuesday brings with respect to contract offers for Smith. So far the Bills and Texans are the only two teams Smith has visited.

Smith unable to address media

Posted by Chris Brown on March 6, 2010 – 12:39 pm

Free agent visitor Wade Smith was to address the media at noon Saturday, but meetings with the coaching staff and front office ran long.

Smith ran out of time before he had to catch a flight to Houston so he did not comment to us or reporters.

OL Smith to also visit Texans

Posted by Chris Brown on March 6, 2010 – 10:32 am

OL Wade Smith, who is wrapping up his visit with the Bills today (Saturday), has another team that he’s scheduled to visit.

According to, Smith will be visiting the Texans later on Saturday. Smith’s hometown is Dallas, so it’s not surprising that he’s interested in hearing what the Texans have to say, knowing it could be a chance to play a lot closer to home.

The Bills advantage is he would be playing for coaches he’s familiar with already in head coach Chan Gailey and offensive line coach Joe D’Allesandris. Guess we’ll know soon what ultimately tips the scales for Smith.

OL Smith the first visit

Posted by Chris Brown on March 5, 2010 – 5:49 pm

The Bills have their first free agent visitor.

Kansas City free agent OL Wade Smith, who played right guard last year for the Chiefs, arrived at One Bills Drive late Friday.

The guy is a capable starter and very familiar to Bills offensive line coach Joe D’Alessandris, who coached him the past two years.

Looking back at some tape from the game between the Bills and Chiefs last season, he had the block as the pulling guard to bust Jamaal Charles for that long touchdown run in the Bills 16-10 win.

In a really thin market, he’d be a good signing for the Bills who need interior line depth with Richie Incognito not tendered and Eric Wood still rehabbing coming off of leg surgery.
